Windpumps of Southern Africa

THE REASON BEHIND

Having grown up on a Karoo farm, the windpump was part of my life. Later I realised that these trusty friends are fast disappearing. I then had a dream of compiling a book of photos of all the remaining windpumps in South Africa.

This is my electronic book with some of my photos...

Acknowledgement.

The inspiration for this project came from a book, Windpumps in South Africa, written and compiled by Dr James Walton in collaboration with Andre Pretorius.

Much of the detail of the various windpumps came from this source.

Some of the photographs used from the Loeriesfontein Windpump museum was taken by Gert du Plessis.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

My aim is to not only document as many existing windpumps as possible, but also show the differences so people can know them better and enjoy them more. The windpump is such a big part of our scenery, that we should know them better.

HISTORY OF WINDPUMPS

The first records found of a windpump in South Africa, is from a painting drawn in 1848.

Records was found of windpumps as from 1869 and the first import was in 1874. These were wooden constructions.

The first all steel windpump was patented in 1855 in England. For more info click on the "South Africa" link above.
